As a plumber, folk say AI won't replace me. But of course it sure looks like it is set to replace all my customers, who will, as a result, no longer be able to afford my services. So it looks to me as though even people like me will be out of work in short order.

In the 1970s I was computer modelling the first decades of this century for HMG. The Geologists were saying that Industrial Civilization would be in decline by 2020 so I'm well aware that this AI nonsense is all part of a plan, hatched decades ago, to bring about a managed decline, in the hope of avoiding a catastrophic collapse.

And your son? Well constantly remind him that the best things in life are free, and always have been, it's just that our culture has somehow forgotten the obvious.

I agree with your logic. It's insane to me that the government doesn't have a plan for if unemployment skyrockets. How will they be funded if nobody is paying taxes? And how will the billionaires keep selling their products? To who? It all seems so short-sighted and nihillistic.

Also… we should be listening to the bankers saying slow down… seems they understand the math of mass unemployment. or maybe it’s also an opportunity, to decouple folks from needing to rely on the markets?

Very short sighted, and, sounds like they just created mass amounts of competitors, who could Leverage these tools better than orgs keep attempting.

Really thought-provoking title! What's the most surprising way you've seen AI actually replace someone in a role you didn't expect?

Jim Amos's avatar

Maybe the fact that many people are losing their role just for pushing back and saying the AI tools don't work properly.

Okay, I’ll bite. I agree, and at a core level? Orgs were never designed to be automation centric, especially true if you seen RPA initiatives…

Staggering how many people are blown away by things like Computer Use and ChatGPT Agent but have never heard of RPA from companies like UIPath and Blue Prism invented 2 decades ago.

Honestly? This is one of the first places folks should start, because if they hadn’t utilized these they likely won’t understand what it means to “scale automation” anyways. Not to mention, most don’t understand the multiple dimensions you have to consider in orgs, or the tech/process/culture debt.
