This article made me think about that open source recommendation engines...(https://github.com/grahamjenson/list_of_recommender_systems) and the need for standards and may be open sourcing recommendation engines of any social networks.. It's a way to think of digital social networks and importantly the search and recommendation engines as a public utility.. Remember reading an article along those lines, but can't find it now sadly..
